Homemade Granola

I love granola. However, the high price tag, high fat content, and high amount of sugar sent me searching for another option. I spent a long time mastering this recipe and getting it to the point where it was low in sugar, low in fat, but full of flavor. I make this and my homemade cereal flakes or my Dark Chocolate Peanut Butter Granola at least once a week.  My family loves it.  If you are a fan of granola, you may also enjoy my Tahini Granola,  Quinoa Granola, Nutty Pumpkin Granola, or Coconut Maple Granola.




Homemade Granola

Ingredients:

8 c. old-fashioned rolled oats
*1/4 cup firmly packed brown sugar
*1/4 cup dark, raw honey
*1/4 cup orange juice
1/4 cup butter (or coconut oil)
1/4 cup raw almonds, chopped
1/4 cup raw walnuts, chopped
2 T. ground flax seed (optional)
dash of cinnamon (optional)

Directions:

1. Preheat oven to 275 degrees F.

2. Melt the butter, honey, brown sugar, and orange juice together. (*For a slightly sweeter granola, you can bring each of these measurements up to 1/3 cup. If you're short on anything, just use 1 cup honey.)

3. Toss together with the oats, flax seed, and chopped nuts.


4. Divide the granola between 2 rimmed sheet pans.  Dust the granola with a little cinnamon. 


5. Bake for 1 hour, stirring every 15 minutes.

6. Cool completely. Continue stirring as it cools. Store in an airtight container.

*Because this granola is lower in fat and sugar, you won't have as many of those "big chunky" pieces of granola like you're used to. But, every once in awhile you'll get one of those beautiful big chunks....

.... and those are the pieces we all fight for!

  1. Looks yummy. I haven't made homemade granola forever. I am going to have to figure out a clean eating way of doing this again. I love granola!! We always would put some sort of nut butter on apples and then dip them in the granola for a nice healthy snack.

  2. Oh the sounds good. I'll take a whole wheat wrap and give it a smear of natural peanut butter and strawberry jam and give it a sprinkle of granola before I roll it up. I think I'll try sliced apples next time.
